I MASTERTON, Friday. In the High-weight Handicap Elicit was a good favourite, with Starboard Light returning a useful dividend Starboard Light soon raced round his field and opened up a good break down tho back from Ladv Gay, with Elicit nnd Motu next. F,licit went in pursuit of Starboard Light over the last half-mile, but made no impression and Starboard Light beat him by six lengths. Lady Gay was six lengths away. Just jn front of Mountain Crag was Novar. Starboard Light spreadeagled tho field nnd Elicit had no chance with the winner For tho Novice Stakes Glare was a little better backed than Golden Flower, with Glen Dhu. the winner, paying a lone price Glen Dhu was always in tho lead nnd won by a length and a-half from Tare, who heat Glare by a length. Golden Flower wns a head away, with Gambler and Streamer next. Glen Dhu, the half-brother by Kilbroney to Kalos. won well. Tare and Glare both finished on well Golden Flower failed to stay. In tho Juvenile Handicap Oral, Retract and Ex Dono were the favourites in a pood betting race. Hunting Call, for second place, paid a much better price than the winner. Oral led across tho too and to the turn from Hunting Cry, Ben Hur and Ex Dono. Ornl held off Hunting Cry in tho run to the post and won by half a length. Ex Dono wns three lengths away, just in front of Retract. Then came Ben Hur, Push and Tobaccoland. Oral finished very well and Hunting Call went his best raco to da to. Ex Dono finished well with his 9.2. Retract and Push both shaped well. In tho Lawn Handicap, for which six horses paraded there was even betting. Billion, Red Fuchsia. Royal Black and Aurora Borealis all carrying plenty of support. Skyridei turned for home just alicno of Billion and Royal Black, with Mothplane moving up. Roy.il Black closed on Skyrider in tho run home, but in a good struggle Skyrider held on to win by a short head. Aurora Borealis wns four lengths away third, with Billion fourth and Red Fuchsia last. It was a good finish. Red Fuchsia's form can be ignored. Tho Masterton Clip saw Mendip always a sound first choice, with solid backing for Tho Swell, Stanchion, Ramcses and Tchcka. At the seven-furiong post Joy Bird rushed up to tho lead and led Mendip at tho halfmile, with Tchcka and Stanchion next. Tresham rushed up approaching tho turn, when Joy Bird just led Mendip. Tchcka and Stanchion. Tho field closed up in the straight and Joy Bird faded out A great race home saw Mendip draw clear with Tchcka, Spearmiss, Rameses nnd Locarno disputing the issue just behind him. Mendip won well by a length and a-qunr-ter from Spearmiss, who beat Tchcka by a head, with Ramcses a short head away fourth. Locarno was fifth, and then came Black Mint and Tresham. Mendip won easily. Spearmiss, Rameses nnd Tchoka ran fine races, and Black Mint was a trifle unlucky. His turn is fast approaching. In the Flying Handicap Bonogne was backed down to a short price, with Quantum the only other supported to nny extent,. The race was run in a very henvy shower. Bonogno took charge when they straightened up for home, ".lid came on to win by a nock from the fast-finishing Quantum, ivho beat Veronese by a length and a-half. Kilm?».zo was fourth and Last Crust nnd Lady Killer were next. Bonogne possibly wns lucky to bent Quantum. Veronese and Kilmezzo both ran good races. In the Grandstand Handicap Full Mark. Lady Spear and Australis were the bent backed, First Rul*' being at a long price. Australis, Bissac nnd Shortly turned for home first nnd Footpad rnn up under nressure, while First Ruler and Full Mnrk also beenmo prominent. First Ruler enmo on to boat Bissac by a length, with Footpad

a neck away third. Full Mark was fourth and Australis and Royal Opera next. First Rulor put up a good performance to score, but both Footpad and Full Mark were unlucky. Footpad is a likely improver. In the Lansdowne Handicap Roi De Vol, Brown Sugar and Moutoa "Wonder were fairly equally backed. St. Melba and Silver Tray wore in front at the end of a furlong and showed tho way to the turn. Over the last 100 yds Roi Do Y T al forged to the front and beat Brown Sugar by half a length. Arrow Boy, finishing fast on the outside, was a length away, and then came Silver Tray, Mouloa Wonder and Waterspear. Roi De Val just won from Brown Sugar, who went a lino race. Arrow Boy was unlucky and Moutoa Wonder lost all chance soon after tho start ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PHESS ASSOCIATION.] MASTERTON, Friday. BREEDING STEEPLECHASERS. BY PHAETON. With tho V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase now worth £SOOO, and stakes in other cross-country events also likely to be increased (says " Fernhill "), breeders may give more thought to the production of horses fitted for stceplechasing. Breeders in the older countries have not overlooked their chances in this connection, and they frequently have had reason. to congratulate themselves on their enterprise. In recent years a well-proved 'chaser with a knowledge of Liverpool country realised 10,000gns, and this is not altogether an isolated case. It might not be worth while to go to that price in order to secure the best jumpers in Australia, but values are bound to improve. Most owners who patronise the cross-country department will be keener than ever to see their colours carried in the Grand National, and they will not be afraid to bid high for the right kind of material. It would, then, pay to turn out from the studs tho stamp of horse needed for real steeplechasing, such as we still see at Flemington. Though the " country " has been considerably modified in the last 25 years or so, it still requires a well-schooled jumper to manage it successfully. The ideal horse for Flemington must be a strapping big fellow, like, sny, Sussex, Redleap, Mountain God, Clan Robert, and Nynngay. A touch of coarseness is no detriment, either, as we have seen time and again. Grand Nationals have been won by iumiers moulded on a comparatively light scale, out as a rule size is a qualification that counts with formidable timber in the way. Thus the breeder who aspires to turnins out Grand National stock should endeavour first to get the quantity—the quality may follow. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. In referring to Captain Whitaker's connection with racing, a writer in the London Sporting Life states that after Lawyer JII ran in tho Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase the horse was found dead in his box A post mortem revealed (lie extraordinary fact that Lawyer 111 had only one lung. Lawyer 111 had won a number of minor races, and the sequel to his National effort in which he ran third was one of the strangest ever recorded of racehorses. Lawyer 111 finished third to Rubio and Matlio Macgregor in 1908. The Demosthenes mare Oratress can appropriately be referred to as a proved stud success. Windbag (by Absurd—Oratrix. by Kilbroney), Concentrate, (by Kilbroney) and Oral (by Chief Ruler), the first of her produce to race, have all proved winners. Paper Money (by Greenback—Epping Rose) is well ahead on the sires' list in New Zealand this season. It is computed that up to April 3 descendants of Paper Money racing in the Dominion had won prize-money to the amount of £17,717. Adding in tho sum won in Australia by Paper Money's progeny they have now won a sum well over £23,000 during the present season. WHANG ARE! RACING CLUB. AUTUMN MEETING. The Whansarci Racing Ch\b's Autumn Meeting, which iR to he held on Thursday and Saturday, promises to be one of the most successful gatherings at the progressive northern township. Everything has been put in capital order at Kensington Park; and it should only requiro fine weather to ensure two days' capital sport. Acceptances for nil events to be run on the first day close next Monday at 5 p.m., and tho same may be lodged either with the secretary, Mr. F. I;. Gunn, Whnngnrei, or with Messrs. Blomficld nnd Co., High Street, Auckland. AUSTRALIAN YEARLINGS. FIFTEEN MORE COMING. Auckland sportsmen operated more extensively at tho recent sale of yearlings in New South Wales than tho cabled accounts of tho same conveyed. Advices to hand state that tho steamer Ulimaroa, which left Sydney for Auckland yesterday, has ]5 horr.es on board. Tho Ulimaroa is due to arrive on Tuesday next
