AT PUREWA CAMP.
VISIT OF HER EXCELLENCY.
On Wednesday afternoon Mrs. J. T. F. Mitchell, provincial president of the Auckland League of Mothers, entertained the wives and relatives of the men of the Purewa and Orakei Railway Construction camps at a social gathering held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall at Purewa. Her Excellency Lady Alice Fergusson was the guest of honour and this being her first, visit to the camps she was greatly interested in what she saw of conditions there. On behalf of the officials and men of the camp she was welcomed by Mr. Costello, and at the hall by Mrs. Vokes on behalf of the womenfolk. Mr. Paul, secretary of the Y.M.C.A., was also a member of the reception party. The hall had been very effectively decorated with nikau palms and ferns by Mr. Paul. After Mrs. Mitchell had made a speech of welcome to her guests, Her Excellency addressed the gathering upon the aim 3 and ideals of the League of Mothers and as a result interest was stimulated and new members joined. The election of officers for the coming year was as follows: —President, Mrs. Vokes; vice-presi-dent. Mrs. Thompson; secretary, Mrs. Knight; treasurer, Mrs. Ronavne. Musical items were given and were much appreciated, Miss F. Robertson singing and Miss Joyce Dewing giving pianoforte solos. Afternoon tea followed, the tables having been arranged with dahlias. A social hour or so was spent, Her Excellency meeting individually as many as possible of those who were present at the gathering.
