RETIREMENT OF THE MAYOR

At tho final meeting of the retiring Tauranga Borough Council last evening the treasurer, Mr. R. B. Shearman, presented a statement of finances for tho year ended on March 31. Tho statement showed that when certain moneys were paid to tho genei.il account it would be in credit oy £653. The watei account was m credit by £ll6l and the Town Hall account showed a credit ot C4oo. The electricity account had a credit balance of £12,032 The rates collected for the year amounted I" £8978, being 98.4 per cent, of the rates collectable. The Chambei ot Commerce wrote expressing appreciation of the woi k dune in commotion with streets improvement. Afiv.ee was received from the Prime Minister thai representations regarding the extension of the railway to Opotik' bad iif!-::n noted for consideration.
'I lie director of town-planning advised that hi; proposed lo visit Tauranga on May 3 to confei with (ho Mayor and town rjerk regarding town-planning. Ho stated that he was willing to address a public meeting on that date, and tho council decided 'o arrange a meeting. R<grot was expressed that the Mayor, Mr, B. Dive, was not seeking re-election aftei having occupied tho position for 10 years. A motion was carried by acclamation recording appreciation of Mr. Dive's services.
