FIRST MAYOR OF NEW LYNN.
FOUR ASPIRANTS IN FIELD.
MR. GARDNER'S CANDIDATURE
With four'candidates in the field the election of New Lynn's first Mayor should prove an interesting contest. The latest candidate to agree to accept nomination is Mr. C. F. Gardner, who has been a member and chairman of the New Lynn Town Board at different times. Approached by a deputation last evening Mr. Gardner agreed to contest the office. Those who have previously announced themselves as candidates are Mr. W. L. Titchener, chairman of tho Town Board, and Messrs. 11. Oakley Browne and Isaac Hughes.
BIRKENHEAD MAYORALTY.
MR. McPHAIL A CANDIDATE
In reply to tho deputation which waited upon him on Tuesday evening, Mr. J. P. McPliail, a member of the Auckland Education Board, and a former Mayor, has consented to become a candidate for the office of Mayor of Birkenhead, There will probably be three candidates, for, in addition to Mr. A. Hadfield, deputy-mayor, who accepted nomination at tho request of the Borough Ciwncil, Mr. E. C. Walton, a former Mayor, also states that he will stand.

PRESENT MAYOR TO STAND
The Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. J. W. Williamson, replied yesterday to tho deputation which requested him to beeomo a candidate lor another term of office. Mr. Williamson placed himself in the hands of the deputation and consented to nomination.
Mr. J. Powell, of Bayswatcr, is mentioned as a probable candidato for election to the Takapuna Borough Council.
CLOSING OF CITY ROLLS. SMALL SUPPLEMENTARY LIST. The supplementary roll for the municipal elections to be held in the city on May 1 will be very light. In spite of the fact that organisers took out over 30,000 enrolment forms, they were able to return only 4731 completed when the supplementary roll was closed at five o'clock yesterday afternoon. In 1927 there were 7192 names on the supplementary roll compared with 10,931 in 1921. the year when a more than usually energetic drive was made to secure enrolments. The claims received for inclusion in the supplementary roll will be checked, carded and then classified in alphabetical order, a work that will take some days. Over 2000 'applications were received yesterday, and the preparations made by the returning officer, Mr. P. F. Notley. and his staff would have enabled the office to handle a great mnnv more.
Nominations for the mayoralty, the City Council, the Hospital Board, and the Harbour Board will close on April 17 at noon. Nominations for the various offices on tho suburban councils will also close at the same time.
