White and Steadrnan, caught fire this morning near Opito Bay and was burned to the water's edge. Owing to the rough weather the crew, Messrs. Opito Bay is 10 miles from Whitianga, and is open to southerly and south-easterly winds. Both survivors returned to Mercury Bay this afternoon. They said tho firo occurred through the engino back-firing as the benzine tank was being replenished. The craft was soon a mass of flames. Fortunately a dinghy was on board and this was quickly lowered, 'the launch was abandoned and it began to drift toward Mercury Island. Tho accident happened about threoquarters of a mile from the shore, and after a strenuous pull in the rough sea the crew managed to land safely. No cream was destroyed, the launch being on tho outward journey with empty cans.
