ASSAULT ON POLICE.

" NOT TO BE TOLERATED." YOUNG MAN SENT TO GAOL. [BY TELEGRAPH.—FRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON", Monday. A sentence of one month's; imprisonment was imposed on John William Compton, aged 24, in the Magistrate's Court today for assaulting Sergeant Clearv. Evidence was given that a Chinese complained that accused had broken his window. Sergeant Cleary took accused to the police station, and, while lie was questioning the Chinese, accused struck him on the side of the face. The sergeant turned round, and was then struck on the mouth by accused.

"An assault of the police under thess circumstances is not to bo tolerated, said the magistrate.
