ELLERSLIE MEETING.

RESPIRATOR'S SURPRISE.

IN FOR DESERT GLOW.

ST. LEGER TO CONCENTRATE

TALLAR'S IMPROVED FORM

The Auckland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting was brought to a conclusion yesterdav, and with the weather conditions of an ideal character there was an attendance of 25,000. Tho Goverrior-Gen-/eral, Sir Charles Fergusson, and Lady 'Alice Fergusson were present, and on arrival were welcomed by Sir Edwin Mitchelson, president of the Auckland Racing Club. Tlieir Excellencies remained on the course until after tho running of the seventh race. Everything throughout the day worked with tbii fine precision characteristic of EHerslie, and with good fields the order of the day the proceedings were Always marked with much spirit. Tho surprise victory during tho day was recorded in connection with the opening event —the Nelson Handicap, in which Respirator scored a wm. The Autumn Handicap, which brought cut a field of ten contestants, furnished a capital race, and resulted in a victory for the Waikato-owncd gelding Desert Glow, 'who was always discerned racing well up and won an e\'citing race by three-quar-ters of a length from a brace of dead],eaters. The Gicut Northern St. Leger Stakes, which was invested with a fine dash of interest, found Concentrate in the position of favourite, and he justified the confidence by winning his race in good style. The totalisator investments during the day amounted to £79,761, against £85.179 10s on the corresponding day last year. The grand total for the meeting was £151,611 10s, compared with last year's figures (£171,945). This represents a decrease of £20.433 10s.

NOTES ON THE RACING. Some excellent sport. BY ARCHER. An outsider in Respirator, who carried G}lb overweight, effected a big surprise in the Nelson Handicap, for which Black Maire, Indolent and Len were best backed. Good Boy began quickest but soon gave way to Air King, who led along the back from Black Mairu, Good Boy, Diamond Queen, Catapult and Respirator. Air King continued to make play through the cutting from Black Maire, Good Boy, Diamond Queen, Catapult, Respirator and Indolynt. The order was practically the same at the turn, although Black Mairo had run up to Air King. Black Maire had charge below the distance, but Respirator came with a good run nud beat him by three-parts of a length. Good Boy was three lengths away third, and Bahama fourth. Then almost in a line came Indolent, Brampton, and Len, with Thurnus, Diamond Queen and Maori Boy next. Respirator won well and has undoubtedly benefited by his operation for throat trouble. Black Maire and Good Boy went solid races and Indolent also did well after being last away. Gomlight Scores. Thirteen started in the Victoria Handicap and Eaglet was a good favourite, with Gemlight and Gay Duke also in demand. Pellette. Gemlight and Eaglet were first to begin, while Trig was badly left. Awamutu ran to the front in a furlong and made the running through the cutting from Pellette, Monalof, Gemlight, Flying Prince, Carl Idem and Eaglet. Awamutu was still in chargo rounding the bend, closely followed by Pellctte, Gemlight, Eaglet and Flying Prince, with Monalof next. Gemlight had Awamutu and Pelletto beaten at the distance and was immediately challenged by Eaglet. Fifty yards from the post Eaglet had her head in front, but her big weight told in the la3t few strides and Gemlight beat her by a head. Gay Duke was four lengths away third and Flying Prince fourth. Next to finish were Pellette, Awamutu, Motere and Taurua. Gemlight finished solidly under pressure and Eaglet ran a great race with her weight. Gay Duke was closer at the finish than at any other stage. All started in the St. Heliers Hurdles and Komak was about £SOO belter backed than Odin, who had a slight call over Clockwork. Master Doon. Highflown and Roman Abbey wero quickest to the first fence and then Highflown went to the front. Komak fell at the second fenco and interfered with Clockwork, whose rider was unseated but was hung up in an iron. Clockwork cantered on for about 100 yards, with his rider clinging round his neck. He was eventually caught by a spectator acd his rider released. Roman Abbey and Highflown were the loaders past the stand from Polyphemus and Master Doon, with Odin lust. Roman Abbey drew out several lengths along the back, and Salamander moved up fourth, otherwise there was littlo chango in the order. Roman Abbey maintained his lead through the cutting and turned into the straight well of Highflown, Odin and Polyphemus. Nothing had a chance with Roman Abbey at the finish and he won easily by five lengths from Odin, who defeated Highflown by a length. Polyphemus was a moderate fourth with Master Doon and Harbour View well beaten. Salamander fell at the second to laet fence. , Dosert Glow's Surprise, There was good wagering on the Autumn Handicap, Corinax being a hot favourite, with White Faug and Hyde Park also strongly fancied. Ti Tree and White Fang soon ran to the front and were the leade r n past the stand from Eager Rose, Hyde Park. Descit Glow and Corinax. Ti Tree continued to make the running along the back, closely attended by White Fang, with Eager Rose, Desert Glow. Hyde Park, Corinax and Queen Arch all well up, and In the Shade last. Ti Treo and White Fane were together in front at the cutting, where Desert Glow, Eager Rose. Hyde Park, Queen Arch and Corinax were their closest attendants, and In the Shade moving up. Ti Treti was beaten before the straight wa-s reached and White Fang led round the bend from Desert Glow, Hyde Park. Eager Rose. Corinax, Queen Arch and In the Shade. in a fine finish Desert Glow won by three-parts of a length from White Fang and Hydo Park, who dead-heated for second. Corinax was fourth, followed by Ti Tree, In the Shade, Royal Doulton and Eager Rose. Desert Glow won well. White Fang and Hyde Park ran right up to their best and Corinax was again handy. In the Shade was never dangerous and Royal Doulton was closer at tho finish than at any other stage. The winner was only moderately barked and returned nearly double figures. There was another surprise in the Autumn Steeplechase, the modorately-sup-ported Mangani winning practically from end-to-end. Stir of the East was favourite and there wast also heavy support for I'endenme and K.awiui. Peudennia and Man-

gani went out in front ond led over the water jump from Potoanui, Kamehawoba and Beau Cavalier. Mangani, Potoanui. Star of the East, Pender, nis and Kamehamelia comprised tho leading division going up tlic hill the first time, when Kawini was tailed oil. Mftv.gam, potoanui. Slur of the East, Pendenms, K-imchaincha and Beau Cavalier were in close order at the double, with Uralla ftftd Kawini a long way back next. Along the back Mangani drew out slightly and waß the leader up the hill from Potoanui, Star of. tho East, Clockwork and Cralla, with Kawini moving up. Mangani turned down the incline clear of Potoanui and Kawini Mid so they raced over tho stone wall into tho straight. Mangani was ridden out at tho finish and won by lout lengths from Potoanui, with Kawini three-parts of a length away third. Uralla was a moderate fourth, followed at intervals by Clockwork, Star of the East, Pendennis :uid Beau Cavalier. Mangani gave a dashing exhibition of fencing and had most of tho tield in troublo nearly it mile from home. Kawini was sot nn almost impossible task in being allowed to tail off nearly a. furlong behind the leaders in the first round. Vexatious fell at tho first fence on the hill and Karachameha at the second to last. Master Arch was pulled lit). Concentrate's Leger, Only fivo started in tho Great Northern St. Leger and Concentrate was made a slightly belter favourite than L'rodice. Toxeuma and Prodico showed out first and then To Money ran to the front. Toxeuma and Tc Money were together in front at the stands about a length clear of Concentrate, with Prodice next. Toxeuma was out two lengths from Concentrate and Te Money along tho back, and Prodice was also close up. Near the five furlong post Prodice moved up and joined Toxeuma ill front, the pair leading through the cutting two lengths clear of Concentrate, with Lucy Hose handy. So they raced into the straight, where Prodico and Toxeuma came out lrom the rails. Prodice was just in front at the distance, but Concentrate finished well on the rails and scored by a length and a-half from Toxeuma. Prodice. who failed in the last little bit, was three-parts of a length away third and Te Money a moderate fourth. Concentrate had tho race run to suit him nnd finished brilliantly.

All started in the Huia Handicap and Aussie was a good favourite, with Vallar and Lady Quex also in demand. Vallar hopped out smartly and Jed through tho cutting from Kmgfield, Lady Quex, The Begum, Marble King, Aussie and Subdivision. Rounding the bend Vallar was two lengths clear of Kingfield, Lady Quex and The Begum, who were abreast, with Subdivision, Marble King and Aussie next.. Vallar was not troubled in the run home and won easily by a length and a-half from Subdivision, who beat The Begum by three lengths. Kingfield was fourth, followed by Royal Tea, Aussie, Some Lady and Marble King. Vallar made no race of it and won with something in hand. Narrow Victory for Stormy. There was gooJ wagering on the Islington Handicap, Llanore being a firm favourite, with King Lu and Le Choucas next in demand. Llanore was soon in front and led along tho back from High Pitch, Stormy, Sir Russell, King Lu and Mithra. Running through the cutting Llanore and High Pitch were together in front, with Mithra, King Lu, Stormy, Sleepy Sol and Master O'Rorke following in close order. High Pitch was first round the bend from Llanore, King Lu, Stormy and Mithra. Stormy challenged at the distance and in a fine finish beat High Pitch by half a head. King Lu was two and a-half lengths back third and Le Choucas, finishing on, fourth. Next to cross the line were Lorienfc 11., Mithra, Sir Russell, Llanoro and Master O'Rorke. Stormy and High Pitch were both at good prices. King Lu ran a fine race under his weight and Le Choucas was travelling very fast at the finish. Llanore had every chance and failed in the run home. Sleepy Sol broke a blood vessel and was pulled up. WINNING OWNERS. The following is a list of tho winning payments to bo made in connection ivith the A.R.C. Autumn Meeting:—H. Cleland, £1140; H. G.
