AUCKLAND MAYORALTY.

MR. POTTER'S DECISION. SEEKING BOROUGH OFFICE. Taking the view that he would be of more service to the city in working for the organisation of a metropolitan board and serving on other boards controlling public services, Mr. E. H. Potter stated yesterday that he would not be a candidate for the city Mayoralty, but that he would again contest tho Mayoralty of Mount Eden. Expressing his thanks for tho support which had been promised in the event of his offering himself, Mr. Potter said he did not think it would be wise for him at this juncture to accept the invitation to stand for the city. " I agree entirely in tho opinion that local body problems are urgent, and that the rapid growth of the city calls for tho best services of citizens," he said. "At the same time I hold that the solution of many questions that confront us is to be found in the board system. The achievements of tho Auckland Electric-lower Board are striking, and I hope that something of the same kind v.-ill result eventually from tho Transport Board. Ihe water supply of Auckland is a problem which grows in importance with each year that passes. These services, properly handled, will provide for a growth in the number of small settlers within reach of town, which will do much for the prosperity of Auckland, and will help to settle the urgent problem of unemployment. Such boards can be organised as a metropolitan hoard to the general advantage of Auckland. "Holding these opinions on the lines in which local government should develop, I am not sure that I cannot be of more service in taking my part on the boards and working for their extension, than I could be as Mayor of even so large and important a local body as tho City Council," concluded Mr. Potter. "While therefore heartily thanking tho many citizens who have offered support and assistance, I must repeat that I am not clear that it would be advisable at tho present time I should be a candidate for the city. However, at the request of tho residents of Mount Eden, 1 will bo a candidate for tho Mayoralty of the borough."
