GIFT OF PORTRAIT.
MR. MOSS DAVIS' GENEROSITY ' UNVEILING IN TOWN HALL. The unveiling of the portrait of Cap,t.ain James Cook, recently presented to the citizens of Auckland by Mr. Moss Davis, of London, was performed by the Mayor, Mr. G. T3ailflr.fi, in the City Council chambers on Thursday evening. "We ail know that Mr. Davis took .1 prominent part in Auckland business activities some years ago, anrl since living in London lie lias given continued evidence by many handsome gifts of his continued affection for Auckland," said the Mayor. Paintings, flatuary and other objects of art 1 ad been presented to tho Art Gallery, autographed letters and engravings to the Library, and many curios to tho Museum. Mr. Baildon expressed pleasure in accepting on behalf of the • itizens yet another gift from Mr. Davis. Ori the opposite side of the chamber was a portrait of Sir John Logan Campbell, the father of Auckland,' 1 and it was fitting that on the other side should bo bung the portrait of the discoverer of New Zealand, a replica of tho original in Greenwich Hospital. A/lc-r the Mayor had unveiled the portrait, Mr. Eliot ft. Davis, son of Mr. Moss Davis, returned thanks for the kind references to his father. B, llcllaby, was accepted with thanks, the Parks Committee being given power to act in the choice of a site, which will probably bo in 'the Domain.
