THEFT OP BICYCLES.
YOUTH EVADES CONSTABLE. RECAPTURE IN THE BUSH. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] WHAXGAREI. Thursday. Charges of stealing four bicycles, valued at £4 10s, £9, £ls and £4 respectively, oa dates between March 19 and 22, were preferred in the Polico Court at Whangarei to-day against Davis Gilbert, aged 20, who appeared on remand. Accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for the theft of the cycle valued at £ls. On the other counts ho was convicted and discharged. Accused's method was to purloin a bicycle and ride it into the country and sell it. Constable lieaslcy followed filbert to Kamo Hill, where ho abandoY'd a bicycle which he had stolen, and made across country. Tho constable overtook him and pehsuadetl him to return to the road. However, accused mado another bolt and escaped. Eventually ho was tracer! to Mocngawahine, where a party of Maoris brought him out of the bush and handed him over to the police.
