RESERVES IN THE CITY.

NEW RECREATJON AREA. NINETEEN ACRES AT NEW LYNN. Several matters affecting city reserves were dealt, with by the Auckland City Council o*: Thursday evening. An area of 19 acres adjacent to the Maungakiekie Golf Club's course at New Lynn is to be added to the city recreation " reserves. The commissioner of Crown lands advised the council that twothirds of the area, which had been declared a recreation reserve, was within the council's jurisdiction, and asked if the council would be prepared to have the area vested in it. The assistant superintendent of parks reported that the reserve was in a very rough state, but could be converted into a playing field for football, tennis and other games. One end of the area, on which there were some young pine trees, would make a natural grandstand. The council agreed to the land being vested in it. A suggestion from the Remuera Central Ratepayers' Association that relief workers should be employed to clear the mangroves from the foreshore of the Orakei basin while the water is low was referred (o the Parks Committee. The council agreed to lease three croquet lawns in Victoria Park to the Ponsonby Croquet Club, at a Cental of £125 a year. The Ponsonbv Amateur Swimming and Life-saving Club was granted permission to erect a clubhouse on the old bathing shed site at Shelly Beach, on condition that the council is represented on the management committee and that the plans of the building are approved by the council. The consent is also subject to the council's authority to act in the matter. Following representations made to the Parks Committee by various organisations at Point Chevalier, the council decided to renew the application made to the Minister of Marine in 1925, asking that the foreshore at the point should be vested in the council.
