ROAD CONDITIONS.
MOTGRING IN THE MUD. VARIOUS CLAY ROUTES SUFFER. Motorists experienced trouble on tlio clay roads in the lower North yesterday, and the Auckland Automobile Association reported that a number of cars were bogged on the east coast route, while many met difficulty on the western highway to the north. Tourists who were fortunate enough to reach the metal at Maungaturoto or Waipu before the heavy downpour have been able to travel further north without much inconvenience. The association was deluged with inquiries concerning northern roads on Thursday, and in the evening motorists were warned against attempting to use unmetalled roads, except in the case of urgent trips. Reconstruction work on the AucklandHamilton Road imposed some inconvenience near the Taupiri Gorge. Here the surface was very greasy, and care had to be exercised in meeting traffic. 'J ho Rangiriri deviation, which has been closed for tar-sealing, was opened on Thursday night to prevent difficulty arising 011 the old clay road. Half a mile south ol Mercer a washout occurred on the newly-formed road, but temporary repairs were immediately carried out. No troublo was reported on the section of (he PokenoPaeroa highway which is under reconstruction. Last evening the association was advised that motorists were meeting trouble on the Waihi-Tauranga Road. On the alternative route to the Hay of l'lenty over the Kaimai Hills conditions were satisfactory, and this road is recommended during the holidays.
