Her Excellency Lady .A!ire Fergusson and party attended the performance at tit. James' Theatre last evening.

Mrs. E. A. Osmond, of Auckland, is visiting Timaru.

Miss Falconer, of Rotorua, is visiting Auckland and is staying at tho Grand Hotel.

Miss Mattock, of Sydney, is visiting Auckland and is staying at Hie Grand Hotel.

Mrs. 'l'. Smith, of Sydney, is visiting Auckland and is staying at the Grand Hotel.

Miss Barbara Gould, of Fendallon Christchurch, left. by the Aorangi yester day, en route to England.

Madanic Irene Ainslev, well-known Auckland singer, returned from a two months' holiday visit to Sydney by the Marama yesterday. Madame Ainslev gave two or three recitals, at one k>f which musical critics attended in force. It is her intention to return to Sydney in August to sing for t he Sydney Philharmonic Society, and again at the end of the year for a performance of the Messiah.

Tho finals of the annual swimming sports of the Auckland Girl Guides will lie held at tho Tepid Baths, Ilobson Street, and judging by tho interest shown in tho preliminary heats there will bo keen competition. The company winning the largest number of points for swimming and" diving will bo presented with-the Wilson Swimming Shield by the provincial commissioner, ' Dr. Buckley Turkington. The Ranger Life-saving Cup will also be presented by the commissioner.

At the fortnightly bridge evening of the Mutual Club, which was held on Monday, tho opportunity was taken to present a farewell gift to Mrs. Georgo Walker, who is leaving on Friday for England. .The lounge and bridge room were decorated with bowls of mauve and gold dahlias, and the guests were received by tho convenors of the bridge circle, Mrs. von Sturmcr and Sirs. F. Wilson The prize-winners were Sirs. 0. Hughes, Mrs. Cahi 11 and ' Mr. von Sturmcr. .

The social committee of the Devonport, sub-branch of the, Navy League gave an entertainment to the inmates of the Costley Home last evening. A thoroughly enjoyable programme was arranged which included both elocutionary and musical items. The following contributed to the success of the evening:—Miss Doreen d'Authrcau, Miss Doreeu Bullimore, Miss Barker, Miss Johnson, Miss Horn, Miss Stevenson, Mrs. Bullimore, Miss Melville, Mrs. Brown and Mr. Taylor. The accompanists were Mrs. Bullimore and Mjss K. Rogers. Other members of the league attending were Mrs. Clcland, president. Mrs. Palmer. Sirs. Cleal, Mrs. Melvin, Miss Wyatt, Miss 11. Tatlon and Miss S. Palmer.
