The Tauranga County Council decided at yesterday's meeting to ask the District Highways Council to recommend to the Main Highways Board that several roads he declared secondary main highways. Several members referred to the necessity of reconstructing bridges in various parts of the county, and the engineer was authorised to prepare a report on bridges requiring renewal and repairs. The engineer reported that ti.e council s new motor grader had been tested out on roads in the Waimapu and Te Puna ridings,, and was proving very satisfactory. The council decided to telegraph to the Main Highways Board calling its attention to the fact that the council has not had a reply with regard to the District Council's recommendation that a subsidy of £3 for £1 be given for metalling the unmetalled portions of the Tauranga-Te Puke main highway. It was decided to make further representations to the Minister of Public Works in respect to subsidising the council's proposals for the improvement of certain by-roads in the Maketu Riding. The chairman of the Local Government Loans Board forwarded fresh sanction in respect to Oropi No. 2 loan of .111 500 for metalling a portion of the TaurangaIlotorua Road, via Oropi; also sanction in respect of loans of £1940 lor metalling the main highway in the. Te Puna Riding; and £2350 for metalling certain by-roads in the 'J'c Puna Riding. Polls of raw--payers in each area will be taken on .March 25.
