AFTER SIX O'CLOCK.
DRINKS AND CHARGES. «
HEAVY CORKAGE FEES
[from our own correspondent.]
SYDNEY, Jan. 31. Interest is being created by tho increasing insistonco of restaurant-keepers on charging heavy corkage for wine and other drinks purchased by customers before six o'clock, and consumed during tho course of the evening—which may mean any timo up to midnight or later. Tho practice is indulged in by all the more expensive establishments, and by most of tho smaller and lesser-known night-haunts.
A much harassed public now has the polico on its side. It has been decided to institute prosecutions against establishments which charge heavy corkago fees. Tho polico say tho practice is a definito breach of the Liquor Act. The managers retort that their charge is not corkago at all; but merely a feo for tho hire of glasses and service.
