[BY TEIECRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

A letter was received at the meeting of the Whangarei County Council to-day from the District Highways Council, recommending the various counties in No. 1 district to bring under the notice of the Prime Minister the statement reported to have been made by the Hon. The letter recommended the local bodies to ascertain from the Prime Minister if the statement was the considered opinion of Cabinet, and to advise that any such step would bo resented by the local bodies in the area. The chairman moved that the council write the Primo Minister, as suggested, but on the suggestion of Mr. A. Johnson it was decided to urge that the petrol tax bo increased, otherwise there would be no possibility of reducing local rating.
