A TORN £5 BANKNOTE.
RIVAL CLAIMANTS.
Two men laid claims to the possession of a £5 banknote in Sydney recently. Each had a portion of tho note, and, later in the day, a detective arrested one on a charge of having obtained £5 by false pretences. Ho had sold his portion of tho banknote to tho Commonwealth Bank.
A man produced a section of a £5 banknote at the bank. One edge was scorched, and tho man explained that he had boon having tea during the previous night, when, as ho was lighting a cigarette, the banknote caught alight. Almost half of it had been burned before he could extinguish the flame. Ho made a statutory declaration to this effect, and was paid £5 for the damaged note. Tho man had barely left the bank when another man presented the other section of tho note. As it was only half of a £5 banknote, ha requested tho bank to pay him £2 10s. He stated that he had been in a city hotel, when a woman, who tried to snatch the £5 banknote out of his hand, tore it in two and decamped with ono portion. The matter was reported to the police, with the result than an arrest was made.
