HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

FINANCIAL RECOVERY.

THE ELECTION OF OFFICERS. A very satisfactory position was disclosed at the annual meeting of the Auckland Horticultural Society last evening, presided over by Mr. H. T. Goldie. The report and balance-sheet read by Mr. W. J. Wernham, showed the loss incurred during 1927 had been extinguished and a sound credit balance now remained. This was largely due to the policy of economy enforced for the year, the saving in hall-hire and to increasing attendance at shows. The nominal roll of membership stood at 366. The chief indication of the increasing interest in floral culture had been the continued activity of the four clubs founded for the exploitation of particular flowers. The evening displays had proved very successful, as also had the shows, which had much improved on those of previous years. Owing to business circumstances the secretary. Mr. A. R. Thornton had resigned, and the work had been carried on by the assistant secretary, Miss B. Rose and the chairman, Mx. Wernham.

Subscriptions totalling £153 and doortakings and sales totalling £165 were the principal sources of the year's income of £350. Cash-in-hand and in the bank amounted to nearly £42, compared with a bank overdraft of £2B at the beginning of the financial year. Following a notice-of-motion, a clause was added to rule 7 instituting a women's committee of twelve members, four to retire annually in rotation. The following officers were elected: — Patron, the Governor-General. Sir Charles Fergusson; vice-patron, Mr. G Baildon; president, Sir Edwin Mitclielson; vicepresidents, Rt. Hon. J. G. Coatcs. Hon. A. J. Stallwortliy. Messrs. H. T. Goldie, W. W. Bruce, P. A. Hay, E. Yates, N. A. Duthie, C. V. Houghton, H. B. J. Bull, N. Brett ; members of executive committee, Messrs. W. Dale, G. Hunt, E. Stewart, A. H. Finer, J. R. Crosby, S. "Wiltshire, R. K. Gilliam. J. K. Ross, F. G. Blackwell, V. Edwards: women's committee, Miss Newbegin, Mrs. Hutchinson. Mrs. Hart; secretary, Mr. R. J. Thornton.
