THE TOMATO SEASON.
MARKET OVER-SUPPLIED. For some weeks past tho local markot has been over-supplied with tomatoes, and tho best fruit has been realising very low prices. At one sale tomatoes brought only Is a case, and the avorage price for tho season is about Is 6d a 201b case. •Most growers have suffered extensive losses, as these prices do not cover the cost of growing tho fruit and many producers prefer to let tho tomatoes . decay on tho plants rather than add to their expenses by picking, packing and transporting them. Sauce manufacturers have not bought as largo quantities as usual this season, as many lines of canned fruit are being imported cheaply. Thus exceptionally largo quantities of fruit aro thrown on tho market for immediate consumption and there' is little or no demand
The action of growers in not marketing their fruit has resulted in smaller supplies appearing daily and prices should rise before the end of the season.
