UNIVERSITY WOMEN.
The council of the Australian Federation of University Women has just received a report of the 12th council meeting of the International Federation of University Women, which took place in Spain towards the end of last year. Delegates, representing 25 countries, were present, Australia being represented by Dr. Georgina Sweet, of Melbourne. It is interesting to note among the business items that the applications of Iceland and Jugoslavia to become members of the International Federation of the University Women were considered satisfactory, while that of Latvia was provisionally accepted; and it was announced that Portugal, China, Uruguay, and Lithuania are endeavouring to form national federations in time to present their applications for membership at the next council meeting. Other discussions centred op such matters as the possibility of arranging travelling facilities in less well-known countries: the compilation of a list of books most characteristic of the national spirit; ideals and life in each country; and a scheme for the exchange of women doctor!). It was decided that each national federation should be asked to consider the advisability of approaching the Government of its country, urging that women, whether married or unmarried, should be granted the same privileges as men, as regards admission to public services, and to any position therein, on the same conditions as men for salary, pensions, etc. It was also considered speciallv important that one at least of the five delegates from each country who will attend the Hague Conference or the Codification of International Law in 1929 should be a woman, as it is likely that the problem of nationality of married women would be discussed.
