COMMENT IN ENGLAND.
PLAYERS AND TACTICS.
TRIBUTE TO JACKSON.
a' trumper in the making. Australian and N.Z. P™ss Association. (Received February 3. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 3. Commenting upon the play in the fourth test cricket match at Adelaide Mr. P. F. Warner, writing in the Morning Post, says England's start was not groat, but it was within a few runs of those made on the opening day at Brisbane. He fancied the side would make another 350. Anything over 350 would still be a good score in test matches. The Australians have not reached 400 in any test match on this tour.
" Australia's bad 3tart " was a line on one of the posters in Fleet Street this morning. Nothing was said about England's bad finish. The crictics pay a tribute to the steadiness of the Australian bowlers.
The Standard says it is anybody's game. It praises Jackson as "a Trumper in the making " and says he rescued his side from a desperate position. He and Hammond are bracketed as heroes when the side was in dire straits. Ryder is not forgotten for setting a captain's example to his men. Mr. A. C. MacLaren writing in tho Sunday Times complains of the slow tactics of the English batsmen. He says Ryder can point to an undeniable success in screwing down England's batsmen to a rate of 40 odd runs an hour in the first six and a half hours of play. Mr. Clem Hill in a cabled message to tho Daily Telegraph says Ryder captained his team with credit. Knowing what the loss of the toss meant the Australians made supreme efforts. Hammond showed his old complaint of playing like an opening batsman and not attempting to force the game till a loose ball came. Then he scored through tho covers. He does not understand why Ryder leaves him these opportunities to make fours.
