BRITISH ARMY ESTIMATES.
LITTLE REDUCTION SHOWN.
HEAVY COST OF ARMAMENTS. PROGRESS OF MECHANISATION. (Received February 3. 11.55 p.m.) Times Gable. LONDON, Feb. 2. Iho Army estimates for 1929 show a reduction of £-500,000, which does not seem large, but extensive economies have already b,ecn effected. Any further substantial reductions arc hampered by llio expensive change to a mechanical basis. The personnel is gradually being diminished, with the increase in machine guns and fighting vehicles, but the savings flow into the provision of modern armaments.
'lhe estimates in particular include provision for a mosquito fleet of light armoured fighting machines, new fast transport, .additional artillery types, and increased quotas of machine guns. The actual maintenance cost has almost reached the pre-war level.
