NEW COMMANDER APPOINTED. REAR-ADMIRAL E. R. EVANS. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. LONDON. Jan. 10. Rear-Admiral E. 1L Evans, the Antarctic explorer, who commanded the Broke in the war. has been appointed to succeed Rear-Admiral G. V. Hyde, of the Australian Navy. He will take over the, command in May. Roar-Admiral Edward R. G. R. Evans was engaged in the action in the Dover Straits on the night of April 20, 1917, when the Swift and the Broke beat off six German destroyers and sank two of them. Tlis last command was of the battleship Beubow, in 1926-27. Rear-Admiral Evans served as a lieutenant, in the Morning, relief ship to the Antarctic expedition of 1902 04, and was, second-in-command of the expedition of 1909-13. returning in command' after the death of Captain Scott. During the. war he commanded the destroyer Mohawk, the flotilla leader Broke, and the cruiser Active. He was appointed fo the D.S.O. and promoted captain in 1917 for service in the Dover Patrol, notably on April 20. 1917. In 1926-27 he commanded the battle-cruiser Repulse. Rear-Admiral Hyde, after brilliant services in the war, was transferred to the Australian Navy in 1916, and recently promoted to its command.
