OBITUARY.

MR. JOSEPH SPEIGHT

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.3 PALMERSTON NORTH. Wednesday.

The death has occurred of Mr. Joseph Speight, at tho age of 88 years. Mr. Speight, who camo of an old Yorkshire family, was born at Bradford. He entered the woollen trade, becoming manager of a mill at the age of 20. He married Miss Quinn, and, in 1879, came with his wife and family of six to New Zealand in the Glenora, one of the last passenger sailing ships engaged in the trade. For some time Mr. Speight was on the staff of the Lyttelton Times, but he relinquished journalism for the land, taking up farming in Canterbury. Until his retirement 10 years ago he farmed in various parts of New Zealand. In 1882 Mr. Speight's wife died, and in 1890 he married Miss C. Johnston, of Christchurch, who survives him. There is also a family of nine.
