INCIDENT AT HAMILTON.
APPLICATION BY AN OWNER.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—rRESS ASSOCIATION.] ' CHRISTCHURCH. Monday.
At a meeting of tho New Zealand Trotting Board, objection to the Waikalo Trotting Club's placing of Anßelm second in the Visitors' Handicap was received from C. G. Lee. of Epsom. He stated that the unfortunate happening of Anselm being allowed to start from 72yds. instead of 84yds. behind deprived his horse, Nelson Dillon, of being placed second, being beaten only in the last' stride by half a head. Had lie known of tho mistake at the timo lie would have protested, and must have been awarded second place. As he speculated £SO on his horse, and was deprived of socond- place by mistako of tho club's officials, he thought he could justly apply for a refund of the bet. '•We should be very careful about this matter," urged a member. The matter was referred back -to the Waikato Club for a report. NOTES FROM EPSOM.
BY SENTRY. There was not a great deal doing at Alexandra Park yesterday, most of the horses being sent along at about threequarter pace, several of them working unhoppled. The aged Goldman was responsible for a fine effort over two miles. He was strapped up and under the circumstances the time lie recorded was pleasing. Etta Cole was sent over a mile, stepping nicely throughout and leaving the distance behind at a respectable speed. Tradesman, who cut one of his legs when he jumped the rails at Clniidelands, has made a good recovery and was on the track doing light work. Untie Bert was allowed to run along and was always pacing kindly. He has benefited by his recent racing and bears a bright appearance. Tlio Gold Bell gelding will strip well at the coming meeting. G. Robertson's team, consisting of Horizon, Billy Carbine and Admiral Lock, look in fine order. Billy Carbine, if he goes truly, should race prominently in slowclass trotting events at the coming meeting. Direct Action, who did not accept for the slow-class trotting event on the opening day of the Auckland meeting, is carrying the right condition. He will probably race 011 the final day of tlio gathering.
There is not much likelihood of Choysa competing at the South Wairarapa meeting. Bonanza's connections are also undecided about making the trip, although it would occasion no surprise to see the chestnut put aboard tho train on Thursday. A two-year-old trotting colt by The Triumph from the dam of Battery Bell is one of the most promising novices seen cut for some time. He is level-headed and has a fine style of moving.
Tlicro will be much support for Great Peter iu his engagements at tho coming meeting. Tho chances are ho will bo seen to more advantage than lie was at lub lust start Ei the Otahuhu fixture. Great Peter has a rare turn of speed and is 'a pood horse, who has ycit to display his best. That bis deceiving pacer Peter Grattan, now under i.». McMnhon's care, is being subjected to the same work as that allotted Gold Jacket, nnd lone, slow tasks are meted out to hiui instead of last work ever? other morning. If Peter Grattan conies to hand in the same manner as Gold Jacket «iid uudei- this method, he ehouid boot) b:-cin to show improved form. Most of the South Island-trvinod representatives engaged at tho Auckland Summer Meeting are due to arrive this week. Alexandra Park should present a busy appearance :it the end of the week. Rockburn, who was missing s.t the Otahuhu meeting owing to an injury to a lei;, in now working again. Ho may be short of a rsce when next produced. South Island-trained horses frequently capture the plums at big meetings held ot Alexandra Park, and at the forthcoming fixture it will bo a surprise if they fail to again do well. There will be nljput 30 more or less proved performers from there racing during the three days, and the locals will therefore find it difficult to win their share of races.
The trotter Gold Siar is unreliable, and, though he showed promiso some time ego, his recent efforts have not been pleasing. If ho would go solidly, ho would bo cutitled to consideration, but it is not likely that he will be at homo in the class he has to meet next week. Occasionally Luvnn shows distinct signs of soreness nnd when in that condition the hard tracks nre against her. Tho Australianbred mare has speed and has been unlucky not to have won more races than she has. If Julian's charge is sound when next produced. sho should make a bold bid for winning honours in short-distance events. Nelson Boy, ono 'of T. G. Fox's team, is a useful trotter that can trot fast. He will not let Etta Colo have matters all hor own way in tho Introductory Handicap.
