AVOIDING FOG DANGERS.
HONOURS GIVEN TO AIRMEN. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received December 14. 7.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Dec. 14. The second session of the International Aeronautical Conference was largely devoted to a discussion of tho scientific elimination of the menace of fog to aviators. l>r E. F. W. Alexanderson, of the General Electric Company, explained various methods of counteracting the dangers of mist with radio devices, notably sound wave beacons. He also spoke of the aid given when an airman is landinn- in a mist by mechanical devices which he can lov.cr to tho ground while the plane is flying, which register the dislance to the earth by means of lights. Relief from the more technical features of the gathering was offered tiy the presentation of the Harmon Trophy, for the year's greatest aeronautical contribution, to Colonel Lindbergh, and the presentation of Distinguished Flying Crosses to Mr. Orvillc Wright, for himself and his lato brother, W'llbur, tho pioneers of modern aviation. Captain Hughes, president of the South Wales Aero Club arrived at Washington to-day and attended tbo conference. Ho had left hospital yesterday fully recovered froin his recent illness.
