MINING NEWS.

hauraki-alasika company.

The directors of the Hauraki-Alaska Gold Mining Company, formed in August of last vear to work low-grade ore, at Neavesvflle, near Thames, state in their annual report that during the year good progress was made at the mine. The battery had been completed and was ready for commencing crushing; as soon as the power plant was erected. The abnormal summer of last year plainly demonstrated the inadvisability of proceeding with the hvdro-electrical scheme as originally outlined. It was therefore decicfed to purchase a suction-gas plant, and as there was an abundance of suitable fuel round the battery site, a cheap supply of power was anticipated. ? Transport presented great difficulties. Over six milos of bullock tracks had to be constructed over rough and swampy country. "Difficulties were also met with in getting suitable foundations for the batteries—over 5000 tons of spoil had to bo excavated. However, the power plant should bo installed and in working order by the middje of February, and the company could then immediately commence crushing operations. The directors unanimously agreed, particularly in view of the high assay yields of the number one level, to make every possible effort to obtain extra capital to develop this portion of the mine. ' In accordance with the articles of association, Messrs. E. W. Inder and L. V. Ellis retire, and offer themselves for re-

election. The manager, Air. A. W. Bird, reports that during thq year a little prospecting w.'is done with encouraging results. No. 1 level of the Golden Belt section was cleaned out and retimbered where necessary for a distance of 800 ft. The reef exposed in the stopes of this level gave highly payable assay values over a width of 7ft., and thero were indications of a large block of. payable ore ready for stoping. Only a small amount of work was now necessary to link up the tram with the Venus quarry from where crust)« ing operations would be commenced. OPERATIONS AT WAIHI.
