DIOCESAN SCHOOL FETE.

The showery weather yesterday unfortunately prevented tho girls of tho Diocesan High School from holding their fete in the spacious school grounds as had been intended. The stalls, however, were moved into the large assembly hall where the girls, their parents and friends, spent an enjoyable time. The fete, which was held for the purpose of augmenting the funds for extending the playing fields, was declared open by Mrs. H. 0. Nolan. . In a brief speech, Mr. G. J. Tunks, chairman of the school council, said how indebted the council was to the mothers and the school committee who had worked so hard to make the fete a success. Mr. A. J. Hutchinson, secretary of the playing fields fund, sincerely thanked the girls who had worked hard during the year, and also the headmistress, Miss Sandford, who had taken a keen interest in the matter. The girls had helped in many ways; for instance, they had made 5000 paper caps for Christmas crackers and had then sold them for tho sum of £SO. Other speakers were Canon Archdall, and the Rev. G. G. Cruickshank, the new chaplain of the Diocesan school. On the platform were Miss .Sandford, Mrs. H. O. Nolan, Mr. and Mrs. Gentles, Mr. and Mrs. GilfiMan, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hutchinson, Mr. Anson, Canon Archdall, Mr. Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Grierson, Mr. Nolan, the ltev. Cruickshank, and the members of the mothers' commit tec.

The stalls made an attractive display and were run by tho girls of the different school houses. They were also in charge of sideshows and afternoon tea which was served in Cowie House. Two stalls were under the supervision of the following members of the. mothers' committoo ; _Mrs. A. E. Ford, Mrs. Stanley Chambers, Mrs. R. E. Fenton, Miss Fenton, Mrs. R. W. Isaacs, Mrs. J. L. Lennox, Mrs F. Learv, Mrs. F. S. Moor- 1 house, and Mrs. j. Wilson. A stall which excited particular interest was one containing a variety of Japanese articles which were brought from tho East by Mrs. H. Goldie, who has just returned from a visit there. Later in the afternoon delightful exhibitions of folk dancing were given by some of the pupils.
