The United States Public Health Service says the influenza "epidemic is now centred in the Middle West and is spreading eastward and may sweep Iho entire country. v Reports from 26 States showed that 21,238 new cases developed in the week ended December 8. The officials said this was probably only ono-fifth of the total cases.

The deaths so far have not been numerous, and although tho health authorities have warned tho public to take precautions they say tho mortality rate will probably bo. much lower than during the winter of 1918-19. However, sevoral universities and other centres have already been closed until after the holidays, because of the outbreak,
