TRADE AND POLITICS.
CANADIAN BY-ELECTION. FEATURES OF THE CAMPAIGN AUSTRALIAN TREATY AN ISSUE Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received November 28, 5.5 p.m.) VANCOUVER. Nov. 27
The Liberals are making tho Austra lian trade treaty one of the paramount issues in a Federal by-election carnnaijn At Victoria. Speakers not only lay stress upon tho great advantages of the treaty, but appeal for the strongest possible Agreements with tho Antipodes.
So far no Conservative attack has beer made on the treaty. On tho contrary tho Conservative papers point out its advantages to British Columbia. Tho Federal Minister of Finance, Mr. «T. A. Robb, derides the contention that tho new Australian tariff now T in forco is harmful to Canada. Ho asks: Is not there plenty of room on tho Pacific coast for an abundanco of raw material, cheap rnotivo-power and intelligent labour where ships have direct Sailings to Australia and New Zealand ? Tho Canadian Pacific coast is dependent not on the wharves built or ou shipping subsidies, but on transpacific friendships, bo says. In tho course of a speech at Victoria, British Columbia, in support of tho candidature of the former Premier of British Columbia, Mr. J. D. Mac Lean, Mr. Robb strongly defended the treaty. ITo quoted figures to show tho tremendous prosperity Canada enjoyed as a result of this and other trade pacts. He said lie wanted British Columbia to benefit well by the 'Australian treaty and by a larger and wider agreement with Australia. But to do that each must play his part.
They could not have trade all their own way. They must make up their minds that " the other fellow " was just ns good a trader as them and must not be satisfied to do all the selling while he did all tho buying.
