ACCIDENT AT VATICAN.
COLLAPSE OF FLOORING.
QUARTERS OF THE GUARD.
PREVENTIVE STEPS FUTILE.
(Received November 29, 12.25 a.m.) Onited Service ROME. Nov. 28.
Fears were felt in regard to - the stability of an entire wing of the Vatican in which the Pope and private officials have their apartments when the flooring of two large rooms on the ground floor suddenly collapsed yesterday.. These rooms formed part of the quarters occupied by tho Palatine Guard. At the moment of tho collapse they were not occupied. Engineers have since found that the collapse of tho floors was due to tha failure of the vaulted ceilings in tho cellars. They had been carelessly built originally and had suffered much, in tlio i)ast three centuries.
A large masonry pillar was recently built in the centre of the vault, but it proved insufficient to prevent tho accident.
