STOCKS AND SHARES.
THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. WIDE RANGE OF SALES. Business was moderately brisk on tho Auckland Stock Exchango yesterday. Holders of some classes of .Government securities wero inclined to offer more favourable terms, but buyers were not tempted. The only sale in the section was a transaction in War Loans, 1939, per cent., for which tho current price of £99 7'' 6d was paid.
The banking section remained relatively quiet. Nationals of New Zealand were done at £7 2s, an advance of 2s on tho pneo given at tho preceding salo three weeks ago. Tho contributing issue of Nationals ol Australasia, quoted cx div., had salo at £9 ss, against £9 12s, a week ago. New South Wales were also quoted ex div. at £SO 15s, with buyers at £SO throughout. Offprs for Now Zealand were advanced from Tuesday's lato call of 61s 6d to 625, but holders, who had accepted 61 s 9d last week, wanted 62s 6d.
No considerable fluctuation occurred ia tho insurance section. The only business was a salt* of Nationals at 16c 6d, against 16s lid last week. In gas offers for Auckland* weio made at 235, a reduction of twopence on the previous day, with holders still asking 23s 4d. The contributing issue changed hands at the ruling rate of 17s 3d.
In shipping Northerns had their first ex div. silo at 15s 4d, against 13s 10d last week. In brewery shares New Zealands, which sold at 55s on Tuesday, improved to record two sales at 565. In miscellaneous Colonial Sugars changed hands at. the first call at £SB 15s, approximating the level of transactions on Tuesday. More were available at that price at (lie second call, and the market eased to close at £SB 5s and £SB. Taranaki Oils changed hands at 4s 6(1, compared with 7s 6(1 at the preceding transaction lato in October. Wilsons Cements were done at 40s 6d.
Iu mining Wailns were done at 14s lCd, an improvement of a penny on tho rate ruling on Tuesday. Mount Lyells appreciated tlneepence on the most recent salo to find a buyer at 38s 6d, and there was inquiry fot mora at 58s 9d, holders 395.
