CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE. GREAT SOUTH ROAD SURFACING. [nY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] POKENO. Wednesday. The. half-yearly conference of the chambers of commerce in the Franklin district was held in the Pokeno Valley Hall today. Delegates were present from the Pokeno, Tuakau, Ptikekohe, Waiuku and Papakura Chambers. Mr. <T. Woodcock, president of the Pokeno Chamber, presided.

It was unanimously resolved to support the request of the Franklin County Council that the Highways Board subsidy for the maintenance of the Great South Road from Papakura to Mercer and the PokenoPaeroa main highway be increased to £3 for £l. It was also decided to urge tho Franklin, Manukau and Raglan County Councils to take into consideration tho case of settlers who have no reasonable access to their holdings, now that the Highways Board is relieving the counties of a substantial portion of the cost of maintaining main highways. Tho opinion that only a concrete surface would be satisfactory on tho Great bouth Road from Papakura onwards was expressed by members in regard to a remit that, the Highways Board be urged to exprdite tho concreting of the Great South Road from Papakura to Hamilton. Members were emphatic that experience showed that concrete was the economical surface where there was a large volume of motor traffic. The rtnuit was carried. Another remit was that the Education Board be asked to consider the claims of back blocks children to tho benefits of dental treatment, speakers urging that either the school dental caravan be again put into use or that, arrangements be made to transport children from outer districts to the. nearest school dental clinic. Other remits carried were:—That tho Government be urged to proceed with the connecting link of railway between Pokeno and Paeroa; that stops be taken to have the proposed new road from Whangarata to Pokeno constructed; and that the time limit set for concession fares to workers travelling on suburban trains he altered from 8 a.in to 9 a.m.
