MUSIC EXAMINATIONS.

THE UNIVERSITY RESULTS. PRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL. MARRED ADVANCE IN PLAYING. The results of the half-yearly practical and theoretical examinations of the School of ylusic of Auckland University College have heeu announced. Tlio examinations took place on November 24 to 27, inclusive. Dr. W. E. Thomas and Dr. S. K. Phillips, of Auckland, were the examiners.

The examiners state they noted a great improvement in the scales antl arpeggios, also a more careful preparation of studies and a marked advance in the playing of the various pieces. There could bo traced a more artistic feeling in many of the candidates' performances. Sightreading unfortunately was still very weak. The llieoretjcal part of the examinations reflected great credit on the teachers. Questions on form and modulation were generally intelligently answered. The basis of marking for associateships and fellowships of the School of Music is;—Maximum, 100; pass, 75. For all other grades in the two examinations the basis is;—Maximum, 100; honours, 85 to 100; first-class, 75 to 84; pass, 65 to 74. Following is tho list of successful candidates :

Practical. Primary Grade.—Honours: Piano, Alfred Brinkman; elocution, Jack Ferris. First class: Piano, Colin Dawson, John Penman Turner, Betty Fcanklin, Nance Johnstone, Kathleen Robertson, Lorna Reed; violin, Thomas Murphy; piano, Marjorie Colegrave. Pass: Piano, Dora R. J. Stallard, Joyce Harkness; elocution, Dorothy Margaret Dreavcr. Junior Grade.—Honours: Piano, Norman Dawe. First-class: Piano, Roie Jenkins, William Bent, Avis Nairn, Jack Guthrie: clarionet, Arnold Mackie. Pass: Piano, Muriel Hunt, Olive, Kneebone, Clare Smales, Agnes McKay, Beatrice Robinson.

Intermediate Grade. First-class: Piano: Ine/. Robinson, Freda Crook. Pa ss: Piano, Jean Carter, Molly Lowther, Joan Bayliss, Glace Moore. ,

Senior Grade—Pass: Elocution, Mavis Honora Drearer, Hilda Davies, Alfred Tilton.

Associate of School of Music.—Pass: Piano, Adelaide Morrish, Gwvneth Jef ferv, Gwendoline Eva Ashford.

Fellowship of the School of Music.— Pass: riano, E. Ronssel-Cossey.

Theoretical. Senior Grade.—First ■••lass: Edith Srheele, Gwen Stewart. Pass: Florence Owen.

Intermediate Grade. —Honours: Catherine Wright. First-class: Florence Churchill, Tossell Simpson, Olga Jervis, Molly Prendergost. Pass: Blanche Kay, Kenneth Whitlow. Junior Grade.—First-class: Margaret Retime.

Primary Grade.—Honours: Beatrice Robinson. First-class: Jean Fogerty, Marie Rollo, Joan Baker. I'a^s: Freda Kevey, Audrey McCaul.
