THE POLITICAL SITUATION.
Sir, —Your correspondents, "Honesty is the Best Policy," and " Fairminded," should sign their names, if they would be taken seriously. If either of them has any good reason why Sir Joseph Ward should not be our next Prime Minister let him clearly state the same, or forever hold his peace. But he should not make a personal attack from an impersonal quarter. With "Ex-Soldier," I think every fair-minded citizen will not begrudge to Mr. Coates his fair meed of appreciation. (Though "a good job." conferred by him to any individual, in his official capacity as head of the Government, does not, in itself, render him personally praiseworthy.) Mr. Coates may have "done bis best" as Prime Minister. Though I hardly think that he himself can conscientiously think so. When Mr. Coates said: "Ladies and Gentlemen,— Each and every one of you can depend upon us to do the right thing, the crowd in Wellington, on election night, would hear him no longer; for, as the country was telling him at that very moment, the majority of electors has not confidence in his Government to do any such thing. Clean Fighter.
