A SHOCKING CASE.
BABY ROASTED ALIVE. CHINESE " DOCTOR " ARRESTED. [FItOM 01.1 l OWN CORRESPONDENT.] SHANGHAI, Oct. 10. It is a well-known fact that Chinese doctois of the "old school" mako some weird concoctions from bats, snakes, rats and other vermin for tho curing of ills to which the Chinese flesh is heir. An unregistered Chinese physician named Chang Sui ping, practising in Chapei, the northern suburb of Shanghai, has eclipsed Ins confreres by preparing a decor! ion composed of the jtiico ot herbs mixed with certain portions of the anatomy'of a new-born infant.
According to the police report "Doctor" Chang secured a new-born infant nbout six hours old, built a fire in the yard at, the back of his otlice and proceeded to roast his victim alive. The cries of the infant attracted the attention of the neighbours, who notified tho Chinese police. Chang's house was raided and tho police discovered, in addition to basins full of blood, a freshly-roasted infant.. 'Doctor" Chang was arrested and taken to (ho constabulary headquarters.
Chang informed tho authorities that liis first thought in preparing his various medicines was for his patients and that he considered outsiders had no right to interfere. Chang also stated that his subject had no claim to a father and that the mot nor did not, care what happened to her child. lie had therefore purchased the poor unfortunate for ten dollars (£1), and could sec no reason for interference by tho police Tho authorities, however, thought, differently, and "Doctor" Chang has been committed for trial on a charge of murder.
