DEATH OF ATHLETE.

COLLAPSE IN A TRAM. FORMER NEW ZEALANDER. MELBOURNE. Nor. 27. Frederick * Wells, better known as " Jumbo " Wells, formerly, of New Zenland. and a champion professional racing cyclist, collapsed in a city tram last night and died in hospital. His nge was 43. Wells had won a ir.ilo wheel race at the Motordrome on Saturday evening. He was an all-round athlete. Frederick Wells was born in the Nelson district and went to Australia some years ago. Ho was n, big, heavy man and looked very awkward on a cycle—hence the nickname bestowed upon him on the other side. Wells competed with much success in Sydney and Melbourne. Three seasons ago ha visited New Zealand and competed at several sports carnivals. He stayed some time in (.'hristchurch where lie won races at tho evening meetings at English Park.
