LAWN TENNIS.

THE BANKING LISTS.

REGRADING OF THE PLAYERS.

THE DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS*

BY SIDELINE.

Tho Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's singles ladders have now been overhauled by tho ladder committee, Messrs. A. K. Turner, A. Goldic and V. R. Johns, and tho position of players fixed as follows: —Men: E. L. Bartleet 1, V. 11. Johns 2, E. W. Griffiths 3, N. Sturt 4, A. C. Stedman 5, A. S. Lamb 6, M. Morrison 7, 11. Entwistlo 8, H. L. Robson 9, H. Brinsden 10, V. N. Hubble 11, H. C. Rowlands 12, W. G. Watkins 13, A. K. Turner 14, C. C. Chalmers 15. Ladies: Miss Marjorio Macfarlano 1, Miss J. Ramsay 2, Mrs. Shroff 3, Mrs. Scott. Watson 4, Miss M. Miller 5, Miss Marion Macfarlano 6, Miss E. E. Miller 7, Mrs. Napier 8, Miss M. Richardson 9, Miss D. Newton 10, Miss Fearnley 11, Miss Mueller 12, Miss N. Whitelaw 13, Mrs. Warren 14, Miss M. Napier 15, Miss M, Potter 16.

The committee obviously has been reluctant, and rightly so, lo disturb tho position of players gained in competitive play. Only in cases of marked improvement has a player been moved ahead of his last year's ranking. The most notable move is that of Stedman from tho bottom position to fifth on the list. This is a tribute to Stedinan's marked improvement, and it has been well earned. That both ho and Sturt will go still higher this season is practically certain. Bartleet on Top.

Bartleet should maintain his place at the top, but both Johns, third, and Griffiths, fourth, will bo hard put to it to hold their respective positions. Sturfc should defeat cither. Stedman defeated Johns in an inter-club competition last season with something to spare, but he would probably find Griffiths a more difficult proposition, although there is little difference between Griffiths and Johns when they themselves meet. Morrison is a player who seems likely to go higher* Brinsden obviously is right out of place. In previous years he has not had the time for ladder matches and if lie is in the same position this year it would be better to withdraw. On performances he is certainly among the first half-a-dozen players in Auckland and it is only misleading to see his name well down in the ranking list.

The ladies' ladder calls for little comment. Miss Marjorio Macfarlano is well fixed in top position and seems likely to remain there for some years. Miss 8.Knight will not bo playing this year and so the second position goes to Mass Ram. say, who on performances last season had a slight but defiuito superiority over Mrs* Shroff and Mrs. Scott-Watson. It remains to be seen whether she can maintain that position this season. Miss Marion Macfarlane, who is in the sixth position, seems the most likely player to improve her ranking. She should fully extend any of those above her, -with, the exception of her sister. From the seventh' position down the players appear to be well matched and only minor alteration are likely. The Remaining Ladders. The ladder committee hopes to hs.vfl completed its work on the junior and the doubles ladders by next week. Those players wishing to go on should forward their names to the secretary, Mr. L. W* Swan.

The entry forms for the national championship meeting are now out. The meeting will be staged on the Auckland Association's courts at Stanley Street, oa December 26, 27. 28, 29 and 31, and following days if necessary. Miss Helen Wills' recent successes in tennis singles against men players led an American authority on the game to state that there are only nine men in the world at tho present time who would defeat her. Careful consideration, however, should convince anyone that tho best women players do not stand a chance against tho best men. The reason is not far to seek. No woman player has the strength or the quickness of foot of a man. It is this and the lightning rushes to tho net which make tho big difference between their games.
