LIGHTING OF STREETS.
SYSTEM IN THE CITY
PROPOSAL FOR MORE LAMPS
The suggestion made by Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, chairman of tho Auckland Electric-Power Board, that evidently tho City Council had found it had "overdone" street lighting was commented upon by the Mayor, Mr. (j. Baildon, yesterday.
" I agree with Mr. Holdsworth that Auckland is one of the best-lighted cities," Mr. Baildon said, "but I do not think we have overdone the lighting. Our system is an expensive one, costing about £30,000 a year, but the people demand that the streets should be well illuminated and so far as we are able we have tried to comply with their wishes. The lighting is graded according to the streets. In the busy thoroughfares we have the brightest lights and we grade the lights down through two other stages, according as to whether the street is an outlet to a residential or business area, or whether it is used solely by the residents in tho particular locality concerned. " Jll deciding on the scheme of lighting the council was guided by its experts and experience has shown, doubtless, that in some cases where the bright lights were installed, lamps of a lower candle-power will suffice. Ry substiluting tlicso Pmnllrr lumps, the council wilt tie atile to reduce its annual costs and also inslal additional lights in areas that arc not now very well served."
