ASSAULT AND ROBBERY.
THREE CALLOUS FOOTPADS. BENEFACTOR STRUCK DOWN. Three young men in Sydney' set upon and badly injured a stranger, who had treated them generously recently. Alfred Ross, nged 26, was walking homeward when, as ho was passing a group of tlneo young men, ono of them asked him for a cigarette. Ho stopped arid gave them each a cigarette and then when ono of them said disconsolately: "Wo'ro down and out, digger; can you give us a couple of 'bob' ?" he gave them 4s 6d—ls 6d each. Tho men thanked the stranger and lie turned and walked away. Ho had gono about a hundred yards when ho was arrested by n summons uttered by one of tho three young men: a summons in a different voico from their previous supplication for aid. "Hey, you," said tho voico behind him, "Key, hand the lot over, now!" Ross halted to find tho tlireo men crowding around liim demanding his money. He demurred anil was instantly struck on tho head with a beer bottle. Ho fell to tho ground, bleeding and helpless, while hands ran through his pockets. The footpads secured £2 6s for their benefactor and fled.
