THE POLITICAL SITUATION.
cs'ir, —It was with feelings of unmixed satisfaction that I read in Thursday's Heiiald Mr. Hubert Hall's letter anent the present state of politics. All is not lost that is delayed. I cannot see that in a free country, notably British, we should be saddled with, a Premier that nono of us want—that is nono but the Uniteus and possibly not all of them. The credit and prosperity of New Zealand is surely too great an asset to be gambled away by a handful of disgruntled politicians who, by their own confession, have no great intellectual capacity—or why did they call to their aid an old man of 73 who is not persona grata except to a small minority. Surely there must bo a few patriots in New Zealand who will not stand silent and see their country thrown to the dogs. We have had Sir Joseph Ward in power and we know his mcthoas. There is Sir Jamas Allen, Sir Francis Bell, Sir Charles Stathain, and plenty more who don't come to my qund at this moment—why can't they get together and choose a man of whom we can bo proud? In England when Labour proved itself impossible the Conservatives held a meeting at the Reform Club and decided to have a change. They chose Mr. Baldwin, an unknown man politically, and he has proved a great success, but still an honest man, "the noblest work of God." There must be a way out of this impasse and let the intellectuals confer and find it—if it is original so much the better. "Great evils require great remedies." Honesty is the Best Policy.
