NEW DEPARTMENTAL HEAD. British Wireless. RUGBY, Nov. 21. Mr. Trevor Bigham, the senior Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, will in future assume control of the Criminal Investigation Department, in succession to Sir Wyndham Childs. Mr. Norman Kendal, one of the deputy commissioners, will take over the duties hitherto performed by Mr. Bigham, who lias for a long time made a close study of criminal investigation work. Major-General Sir' Wyndham Childs resigned and retired from his position as an Assistant Commissioner on November 6, the day the new Commissioner, Lord Byng, took up his duties. Since 1921 he had had the direction of the Special Branch at Scotland Yard which deals with the control of aliens and the Criminal Investigation Department. He was responsible, in connection with tho recent murder on the, road in Essex of Police-Constable Gutteridge, for establishing the cartridge-case clue, which proved an important factor in the conviction for murder of Browne and Kennedy. The work of the Special Branch and the Crjminal Investigation Department was formerly performed by two Assistant Commissioners. Since Sir Wyndham Childs has held office the activities of both departments have been considerably extended: Mr. Trevor Bigham is a son of Viscount Mersey, who had a distinguished career c„s Mr. Justice Bigham.
