ACTRESS AND CAPTAIN.
ALLEGED ASSAULT OASE. VERDICT FOR THE DEFENDANT, Austrnliun and N.SS, Press Association. LONDON. Nov. 14. Society people in London are interested in the strange story of Gwenneth Mannering, a. West Lnd actress. In an action for damages in Mr. Justice MoCardie's Court she sued Captain lurncr Coles, a member'of the Carlton Club, for alleged assault after a dance on Now Year's NightMiss Mannering stated in evidence that defendant was married, but said he was to be divorced and promised to marry her. After a quarrel in a car lie turned her out oh to a snow-covered road, although sJio was in evening dress, and then locked her up in a garago, where he boat and bruised her and tore her dress, causing lior to collapse. yir Patrick Hastings, in cross-examina-tion on behalf of tho defence, suggested that plaintiff was drunk on tho occasion referred to, also that tho purpose of her fiction was to cause agony of mind to Captain and Mrs. Turner Coles.
Defendant said the actress threw hyrcelf in tho snow. She also struck him in the face. She was intoxicated.
Tho jury brought in a verdict in favour of defendant.
