ELECTION DEPOSITS LOST.

MANY ASPIRANTS TO PAY. THIRTY-THREE CANDIDATES. LABOUR SUFFERS MOST. From the general election figures so far available it appears that 33 candidatrs have forfeited their deposit of £lO ea<h. Of this number right are Maoris. The Treasury, as a result, will benefit to the extent of £330. The Legislature Act provides that if the total rumber of votes received by any unsuccessful candidate is less thin one-fourth of the total number of votes received by the successful candidate the deposit shall be forfeited and paid "into the Consolidated Fund. Those who appear to have forfeited their deposits include 10 Labour, 5 Independent Government, 2 Government. 2 LiberalLabour, 2 Treaty of Wait an pi (Maori), 1 United Party, 1 Country Party, 1 Liberal and 1 Independent Labour candidate, 1 Christian-Socialist and 7 Independents

The candidates affected are as follows, although a few miy yet eseape the penalty if the. official count goes in their favour:— J. Joiner and F. J. Lysnar (Auckland Central), P. 13 Fitzhorbert and Mrs. L. Paterson (Crev Lynn), O. E. Burton (Eden), R. E. Hornblow (Bay of Islands), A. If. Curtis (Marsden), W. Brown (Raglan), E. Judd and A. G. Christopher (Rotorua), C. Croall (Waitomo), W. G. Simpson (New Plymouth), J. Whittle, (Pahiatua), F. Andrew (Rangitikei), 11. J. D. McManaway (Manawatu), J. Purchase (Otaki), Mrs. M. Young (Wellington Central),' J. J. Clarko (Wellington East), F. L. Turley (Hurunui), M. Williams and R. W. Wightman (Mid-Canterbury), W. A. McLac.hlan (Chalmers), G. S. Thomson (Dunedin North), G. Pulley (Wallace), W. M. C. Denham (Awarua), H K. Waiaua, Hono Heke, R. Wi Hongi, Eamaho Maika and L. W. Parore (Northern Maori), T. P. Stewart (Eastern Maori) and W. T. Pitama and T. M. Erihana (Southern Maori). The .smallest vote was polled by Mr. L. W. Parore, but the nine votes recorded for him in tho Northern Maori electorate were given him in error, as he withdrew from the contest a few days before the election. Mr. W. A. McLachlan, Independent Government candidate, in a four-cornered contest in Dunedin North, was at the bottom of the European poll. He secured only 37 votes. Several candidates forfeited their deposits by a margin of a few votes.
