THE TRANSPORT BOARD.
SIX CITY MEMBERS.
NEXT MOVE WITH SUBURBS.
Keen competition for a seat on the Auckland Transport Board was displayed yesterday, when from 15 nominations the City Council choso as its six representatives tho Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, Mr. J. A. C. AUum, Mr. G. Ashley, Mr. M. J. Coylc, Mr. A. J. Entrican and Mr. E. J. Pliolan. The four representatives yet to be chosen by the suburban bodies will complete the personnel of the board, which is to take over the control of the city's transport undertaking. "I do not intend to nominate a 'ticket'," said the Mayor at the outset of tho special meeting. He proposed to invite nominations arid suggested the ordinary ballot system should be adopted, t.ho six nominees at tho top of tho poll to be members of the board.
Mr. 0. McHrinc suggested that an exhaustive ballot should bo taken to ensure that each member selected had a majority of the votes.
Tho Mayor said he did not think that was necessary and recalled that the council itself was elected in the way it was proposed to select the representatives of the board.
Answering a question by Miss Basten the town clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, gave it as his opinion that members of the Power Board wore clearly eligible us members of the Transport Board.
Tho following nominations were received :—The Mayor, Messrs. Alluni. Phelan, Entrican, M. J. Bennett, L. A. Eadv, Coyle, W. L. Casey, J. B. Paterson, J. Donald, J. Dempsev, Ashley, G. Davis, T. Bloodworth and J. W. Kealy. Mr. S. 1. Crookes, who is absent from New Zealand, was nominated, but the Mayor said he could not accept the nomination, as a nominee's consent was first required. Mr. A. <). Stallworthy and Mr. 11. Totter declined nomination.
Mr. Ashley lopped llic poll, Mr. Alluni, the Mayor and Mr. Phelan being next in order. Messrs. Coyle, Entrican and Eady tied for the remaining two places, Mr. Eatlv being eliminated in a second ballot. Mr. Entrican is the only successful nominee who is not a member of the council's Trn in ways Commit t eo. The names of the citv!s representatives were forwarded to the Minister of Public Works last evening. There is a doubt as to who will convene the first meeting of the board, but it is expected that either the Governor-General or the Mill ister will do so, as soon as the full personnel is known. Pevernl persons have been nominated by the suburban authorities and it is possible an elimination will be necessary to reduce tho number to four.
