STOCKS AND SHARES.

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE.

UPWARD TREND IN BREWERIES

Tho most significant feature of quiet business on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday was the hardening of brewery debentures and shares, a reflection of tho decision on tho previous day's licensing referendum.

Government security quotations showed little change. In Inscribed Stock tho 1936, 5£ per cent, issue, had sale at £lOl ss, after touching £lOl 7s 6d earlier in tho week. Thero was late inquiry at tho sale prico, but holders were silent. In commercial debentures New Zealand Breweries were done at 24s lid and 255, against 24s 9d on tho provious day, and 24s 6d earlior in tho week More were wanted at 255, but holders hardened to 26s

Other sections were unusually unpro ductive of sales. In banks Nationals of New Zealand firmed, holders asking £7 6s, or a shilling more than on Wednesday, buyers, £7 2,5. Now Zealands, after the first call, could bo had at 61s 6d, the current market price, but inquiries were unchanged at 61s 3d. The only noteworthy change in insurance shares was an advance of sixpence in offers for Queenslands, which were sought at 66s 6d, without drawing a response from holders. In coal Pukemiros were done at 67s 6d, tho ruling rate. In timber holders of Kauris reduced their price during tho day from 20s to 19s Bcf, whereupon offers were advanced by fourpence to 19s 4d, btit no business was done. There was a salo of these shares at 19s 2d last week. In brewery shares holders of New Zealands wanted 60s 6tl. or Is 6d more than on Wednesday. Buyers, howover, after renewing their offers of 57s 6d, dropped to 575. Staples wero sought at 4ls, an advance of sixpence. In miscellaneous British Tobaccos, which sold last week at 445. were in improved request at 44s ,6d. Sellers, who had earlier quoted 455, withdrew at the late call Colonial Sugars were still wanted at £6O, and holders, after asking £6l 10s. de clined to £6l ss. Wednesday's level. In mining Waihis were inmiired for at 14s, the improved level at which a sale was made on Wednesday, lint holders wanted 14s 2d

The following sales took place:—ln scribed Pt"ek, 1936. 5J per cent., £lOl ss: New Zealand Breweries, debentures. 24s lid, 255; Pukemiro Collieries, 67s 6d
