PUMICE LAND'S YIELD.
RESULTS AT TOKOROA. The Matawara Land Company, Tokoroa, recently sent away in one line a draft of 700 fat wethers. The paddock on which tho sheep were "topped off," after wintering on swedes, is a splendid example of ryegrass on pumice soil. In much earlier work by sotileVs in pasture establishment, ryegrass has, through lack of confidence in its suitability, been neglected. Given the right treatment, however, it. is clear that it can be permanently established, much to tho increased value of our light soil pastures. The grass mixture as sown by the Matarawa Land Company is 101b. of rye, 141b. cocksfoot, and 51b. of timothy. A good, clean, firm seedbed is necessary Tho later annual topdressing of a pasture is two bags of slag to ono of superphosphate an acre. In the development of its pasture the company first makes use of the tramping by heavy cattlo for tho consolidation of the recently-worked light soil. This is followed by a stocking with sheep. Dairying is not recommended until these pastures lire what may bo termed well established.
