A QUEENSLAND DISCOVERY. A three-year-old filly rejoicing in the numo of Paddi Eve was responsible for a brace of pronounced surprises at the Queensland Turf recent spring meeting. Practically without any form to recommend her to notice, she was not takon seriously in the contest for the Queensland Derby, but that did not prevent her from romping home in front of a field of nine. The Queensland Cup was Paddi Eve's next mission, and, as in the decision of that race the led tho field homo and was timed to run tho two miles in Sin 25}s, sbo can bo regarded as ono of the chief discoveries of the season. Aucklandera can tako some thing more than a passing interest in Paddi Eve. for lier dam, Evelyn Soult (by Soult— St. Evelyn), was bred in this Dominion. Paddi Eve was not raced at two years old, so that happy experiences have once again attended a patient policy. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. Despite tho failures that are down against Haze, the Demosthenes gelding continues to be mentioned as a horse that may bring off a surprise victory. Haze is now in bis seventh year, so that he has no time to lose if he is to bring oil tho surprise win.

A photograph of the finish for the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on tho 6th inst. received by yesterday's mail shows Statesman fairly Bailing homo in front, as the saying goes. The victory registered by the New South Wales horso was clearly of the pronounced order.

Included among the yearlings this year at tho Koatanui Stud is a full-sister to Commendation, who is voted to be tho most attractive-looking 0110 of her sex that has been bred at the Wanganui estate. When a yearling Commendation was sold under the hammer for 200gns, and it will be interesting to note tho sum tho yearling filly will realise when sho goes into the sale-ring at Trenthani next January.

First Sight, who won the Fendalton Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday, is given credit for a good performance, and the prediction is offered that ho will be seen to further advantage as ho matures with age. First Sight 13 a four-year-old gelding by imported Gay Lad (a grandson of the celebrated Cyllene), while his dam. Snapshot, is by C'alibio (son of Light Artillery), so that it will bo seen he has breeding to recommend him to notice.

Concentrate, tho three-year-old full brother to the New Zealand Cup winner, Oratrix, is marked as a horso likely to improve. Ho ran unplaced in tho New Zealand Derby, but it is contended that ho waa not quite himself that day. Possibly there was not a great amount of merit in his head victory over Moorgas in the Stonyweight Handcap, for it waa a question of equal weights. Still, it can be contended that Concentrate galloped the mile course satisfactorily. Concentrate figures in tho Great Northern Derby and if tho eon of Kilbroney trains on properly his owner may be encouraged to give him an opportunity to win classic honours PAEIiOA RACES. NON-TOTALISATOR MEETING. The 11011 -totalisator meeting to ho held at Paeroa to-morrow (Saturday) promises to bo a complete success. A capital list of acceptances has been received for the tfoven events forming the programme, and with fine weather a good day's sport should result. FORTHCOMING MEETINGS. TE KUITI RACING CLUB. Acceptances for all events to be run on tho first day of the To Kuili Racing Club's forthcoming meeting close to-day (Friday), and tho samo may bo lodged with Messrs. Blornfield and Co., High Street, Auckland, up to 5 p.m., and with the secretary, Mr. A. W. Whyte, To Kuiti, up to 9 p.m. NOTES FROM WANGANUI. [BY TELECRAI'II. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUI, Thursday. The Hunterville sportsman Mr. T. A. Duncan is enioying a good innings in his racing operations this season. So far his horses have won £'1317 in prize-money this term, which places him well in front on the winning owners' list. Mr. B. T. Bennett has purchased the Aero gelding Acred, formerly owned and trained by Mr. R. Mcßuo, of Patea. So far Mr. W. Duncan, a big'winner in previous years with such good ouea as Client, Tamatete. Tukia and others, is having no luck this season. His turn may conic later, but he has nothing of much account to run for him nt present.

Glenross went amiss on tho eve of the Wanganui Spring Meeting and will not be seen out again until the autumn. The eon of Absurd—Bronze can gallop when at hia best.

Limited has failed badly of lato and appears to havo slipped back to a commoner.

Ruanui is ono that might provo useful this season. Tho eon of Absurd—Rose Queen showed fair promise as a three-year-old, but, na he was growing, ho was not raced much. Ruanui ia to bo a runner at the Feilding meeting.

Mr. George Currio will havo to depend upon Lyßander in tho Feilding Stakes, as Episode ia not to bo a runner in that CV ,I" Coleman has Tho Warden looking well after his spell. Tho son of The Verderer showed much promise by his running at Marton and Wanganui, and he should be hard to beat in his Feilding engagements. Lysander has not done much since his return from Trentham, but 110 looks well and should bo in excellent fettle for the Feilding meeting.

Pedestal (by Thespian—Eulogy) is going along nicely and it will be interesting to see how tho half-brother to Commendation shapes in hia first public appearance, which will be in the Nursery Handicap at Feilding,

Ceremony is also in thnt. event,, and the brother to Lysander should show that he knows how to gallop. Ho is more forward than Pedestal and with the racing be has bad should soon bo at hia beat.

TAKAPUNA MEETING. THE FIRST DAY'S EVENTS. DECLARATION OF WEIGHTS. [by telegraph.—vn ess association.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. Weights for tho first day of the Takapuna Jockey Club's Meeting are:—

PRINCE HUMPHREY. INJURY VERY SEVERE. J, T. Jamieson, the Takanini trainer, has returned from Melbourne, whero he took Prince Humphrey for the V.R.C. Derby. Unfortunately, Prince Humphrey was galloped on in tho race and hia chance spoiled. The injury was very severo, a tendon of tho hind leg being completely 6evered. Doubts are expressed as to whether he will race again. Prince Humphrey is in Mr. Woods' veterinary hospital at Caulfield, TURF IN AUSTRALIA. JOCKEY DISQUALIFIED. Quinlivan hns Arrow Boy and First Ruler in work. Arrow Boy has done, well sinco racing at Trenthaiu and 'probably will ho raced at Levin 011 Saturday.
