SMOKERS AND NON-SMOKERS.

Sir, —I wish to add my protest to that of "T.W." against the growing practice of smoking in railway carriages marked non-smoking. During a recent journey I made to and from Marton in non-smoking carriages, smoking was indulged in by more than one inconsiderate passenger, and totally ignored by the guards. Smoking in such a confined space is quite sufficiently objectionable to non-smokers on daylight or local trains, but is very much more so on long night journeys. And it should not be necessary for the sufferers to have to complain. I trust the railway authorities will take this matter in hand, and make it a strict injunction to those in charge of trains to forbid all smoking in non-smoking carriages. Fresh Air.
