NEW LYNN ROADS.
IMPROVEMENT SCHEME
AIDING DISTRICT'S PROGRESS
A comprehensive roading scheme, designed to benefit tho entire New Lynn Town District, was proposed by the chairman, Mr. W. L. Titchener, at the meeting of the board on Tuesday evening.
The chairman said it was extremely doubtful whether there was any district in tho whole metropolitan area of Auckland which had such bad roads as those in New Lynn. The upkeep of these most unsatisfactory avenues of communication was grossly excessive, while their presence was definitely retarding constructive progress to such an extent that property values had depreciated far beyond any point of comparison with the cost of constructing and maintaining up-to-date highways. Tho trouble dated back to the time when settlement first began in New Lynn. Then there was no effort to build roads; a few loads of broken bricks and scoria were tipped on tho clay and if the light traflic of tho time was kept out of tho mud the roadway was considered satisfactory. No foundations were put in and none existed to-day except in a few isolated roads not yet finished. Any effort to keep such carriageways efficient under modern loads was fulilo and a ridiculous waste of money. The most expensive repairs would be nullified in a very short time and only one remedy could effect a permanent improvement with a corresponding saving of costs. The remedy was in the complete reconstruction of the roads on modern lines. I'lio cost would not be prohibitive and from every point of view would be fully justified ; so much so, in fact, that he believed the board would be failing in its duty to the district if it delayed in bringing forward a comprehensive scheme designecl to overtake the arrears arising from tho timidity of the past. He proposed asking the board to consider the adoption of a programme do signed to give each portion of the dis trict at least one good modern road con necting with tho centre of New Lynn fie suggested li committee should bp set up to go fully into the matter. The roads recommended for permanent construction are Great North Road, Por tage Road, Totara Avenue, Matai Avenue, Margan Avenue, Seabrook Avenue, Hutchinson Avenue, Islington Avenue, Astley Avenue, Titirangi Road, Bollard Avenue, Queen Street, Rata Street, Rimu Street, Manukau Road, and Todd's Avenue.
The cost of the proposed roadwork depends largely on factors which are not vet available, so that any closo estimate of effect on rates is not possible. The board will go thoroughly into the scheme as outlined.
